McAlevy's Fort
Corridor Improvement Project

Jackson Township, Huntingdon County, PA

Intersection of PA 26 with PA 305; former site of McAlevy's Fort since 1778.

TPD Project Director: Christy Staudt

Client: PennDOT District 9-0

Completion Date: April 2003

TPD has been selected by PennDOT District 9-0 as part of a team of consultants to conduct Steps 3 and 4 of the Transportation Project Development Process (TPDP) for the McAlevy's Fort Corridor Improvement Project. TPD's role in the project includes conducting a needs study (Step 3 of the TPDP) and assisting in gaining agency concurrence on the need for a project. TPD will also be involved in developing and implementing public involvement and agency coordination strategies throughout both Steps 3 and 4.

TPD's role in the project is pivotal since the documentation of transportation needs guides the development and selection of transportation improvement alternatives. If there is no concurrence on the need for the project, it may not receive environmental clearance, which would stop the project. In the rural community of McAlevy's Fort, the project needs will focus on quality of life issues and safety issues since the traffic volumes and congestion are not as heavy as in urban areas. The lack of congested conditions will make the documentation of project needs more difficult.

TPD is also providing transportation engineering assistance to the prime consultant for Step 4: Preliminary Alternative Analysis.

TPD's role in the McAlevy's Fort project includes the following:

  • The identification of project boundaries
  • Project Advisory (PAC) formation and coordination
  • Traffic and accident analysis
  • Land use analysis
  • Preparation of the Needs Study
  • Agency coordination
  • Public involvement, including several newsletters and public meetings
