Traffic Planning and Design, Inc. (TPD) was selected as the consultant to design and implement a closed loop traffic signal system for 8 signals along the Belfield Avenue Corridor, located in the North-Northwest section in the City of Philadelphia. The goal of the project is to provide better signal progression along this 1.3 mile, two lane arterial route serving an ADT of approximately 16,000 vehicles as well as linking to the closed loop system that will be supported by the Broad Street backbone. The anticipated result of this project will be an increase in capacity at the signalized intersections along the corridor and the ability to monitor travel patterns as well as alter traffic signal timings on an as needed basis.
TPD is in the initial stages of preparing the Preliminary Plan Package (Step 9) submission to be ready by the winter of 2000 and a Plan Specification and Estimate (PS&E) package for the Fall of 2001.
This signal project entails a complete traffic signal intersection modification. Replacement of all traffic control equipment, including but not limited to, mastarms, signal heads, electromechanical controllers (to solid-state 170 Controllers), conduit, and cable will be incorporated into the design. Fiber optic cable will be the means of communication for the entire corridor, which will link into the existing Traffic Control Center operated by the Streets Department. Signal coordination utilizing various timing plans, will be incorporated to ensure the optimum corridor capacity and public safety. Roadway design will be limited but may be necessary to safely and efficiently channelize traffic at non-standard, four-leg and five-leg intersections.
