District 8-0 HOP Contract Awarded

TPD was selected as the prime consultant by PennDOT Engineering District 8-0 (Dauphin, Lebanon, Perry, Cumberland, Lancaster, York, Adams, and Franklin Counties) for a three-year Open End Highway Occupancy Permit (HOP) Review Assistance contract.

This contract is especially important to TPD, in that it will accelerate the planned opening of a Harrisburg office to provide the best possible service and responsiveness to the District. Site selection for the office is underway and arrangements will be finalized by the end of the year.

City of Philadelphia

TPD was selected by the City of Philadelphia to prepare Traffic Signal Construction and Interconnect Plans for 8 traffic signals along Belfield Avenue in the Olney section of Philadelphia.

This project will consist of several tasks, including Traffic Signal Warrant Analyses, Accident Analyses, Traffic Signal and Interconnect Designs, and Preliminary Plans, Specification, and Cost Estimates (PS&E) Plans.

TPD is no new comer to the Philadelphia area. TPD recently completed Roadway Improvements, Signal Design, and Maintenance and Protection of Traffic (MPT) Plans for the Rising Sun and Adam's Avenues corridors in Northeast Philadelphia.

TPD Announces Plans For Lehigh Valley Office

This month, TPD announced its plans to open a satellite office in the Lehigh Valley to better serve the transportation needs of the area. When opened, TPD will be the only engineering company located in the Lehigh Valley that is exclusively dedicated to transportation and related environmental services.

The TPD Lehigh Valley office is located in Center Valley and will service the Lehigh Valley region as well as the rest of Northeastern Pennsylvania, New York, and Northern New Jersey.

SEPTEMBER 1999

Traffic Signals Unit Restructured

September, TPD reorganized its Traffic Signals Unit.  The restructuring began with the hiring of Robert G. Stone as Traffic Signals Operations Manager in. Bob is a 30-year PennDOT veteran from District 5-0 (Berks, Carbon, Lehigh, Monroe, Northampton, and Schuylkill Counties) where he served as Traffic Control Specialist.

At PennDOT District 5-0, Bob worked on the U.S. Route 22 (22/renew) Ramp Metering and Signal Design/Coordination in Lehigh and Northampton Counties. At TPD, he will oversee the daily operations of the Traffic Signals Department and assist on major projects such as the design of a 49 signal closed loop system in Scranton’s Central Business District. Over the course of his employment with PennDOT, Mr. Stone worked extensively with municipalities and private developers. Now, he looks forward to the challenges awaiting him as both a project manager and a mentor at TPD.

Assisting Bob is Wayne Droesser as Manager of Traffic Signal Permitting and Vince DeFlavia, Manager of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).  Over the course of Wayne's five years at TPD, he has been involved with the management and preparation of the firm's largest and most complex state (PennDOT), municipal, and private traffic signal design projects. Through his experience, Wayne has developed an excellent understanding of public concerns regarding safety issues associated with traffic control.

During his 4 years at the Streets Department prior to joining TPD, Vince was involved with the preparation, review, and supervision of hundreds of traffic signal design and upgrade projects. In his role at TPD, Vince is directly responsible for the major Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) initiatives, including closed loop traffic signal systems, that have established TPD as experts in the field.

Area Newspapers Take Notice of TPD

During 1999, TPD has received a great deal of exposure from area newspapers. The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Pottstown Mercury, The Philadelphia Business Journal, The Route 422 Business Advisor, and most recently, The Norristown Times Herald, have all published stories about TPD. The Times Herald article was perhaps our biggest hit yet. This marked the first time that TPD made the business section. Previous newspapers covered TPD as a human interest story. The Times Herald article, published on July 30, 1999, included a color photo of President, Kevin Johnson, on the front page of the business section, and a smaller picture on the front page of the paper indicating where this story could be found.

Currently, Civil Engineering (CE) News magazine is preparing to run a feature story on TPD, marking the 5th time in 1999 and the 6th time in the past 12 months (Morning Call, 1998) that we’ve received significant media attention.

TPD Lands Major Transportation Planning Job In Delaware

AstraZeneca has awarded TPD a contract to prepare a traffic impact study for the new Headquarters Building in Delaware.  Astra Pharmaceuticals L.P. initially awarded TPD with the contract for the traffic study for their new headquarters in August 1998.  But, as John Hendricks and his team were preparing the traffic impact study for the planned relocation of Astra Pharmaceuticals’ US Corporate Headquarters for Chesterbrook in East Goshen Township, Chester County, PA., they merged with Zeneca.  Newly conjoined AstraZeneca scrapped the Pennsylvania Headquarters building and decided to adjoin the new headquarters building to the existing Zeneca building in Fairfax, DE.

AstraZeneca retained Chuck Manula (of Astra) as Facilities Manager, who was in charge of the original relocation project.  Impressed with TPD’s work on the Pennsylvania project, Chuck requested TPD’s services for the Delaware project.

TPD will do the traffic work for the planned expansion which may include over 2 million square foot of office and laboratory space.  Furthermore, TPD has an excellent chance to win the contract for the design of associated road improvements and site access driveways.   But most important is the exposure that TPD receives from this project.  The State offered an incentive package to AstraZeneca to build in Delaware instead of Pennsylvania, and hence this project will have the attention of Delaware Governor Thomas Carper.

JUNE 1999

Area Media Focuses on TPD President, Kevin L. Johnson, P.E.

Recently, TPD President/Founder Kevin L. Johnson, P.E. was featured in both the Philadelphia Business Journal and the Morning Call. Kevin (as he is called at TPD) appeared in the Philadelphia Business Journal’s CEO Portrait Feature in the March 5-11, 1999 edition. In this article Kevin talks about his business philosophies (which he has used to make TPD one of Philly’s fastest growing private companies), his best and worst decisions, and reveals some personal information about himself.

-------------------------

In the article that appeared in the Morning Call on June 1, 1999, Kevin Johnson was praised for his courage and diligence. This story entitled “Traffic Planner on Road to Success” tells of Kevin's audacious spirit which prompted him and a partner to start their own civil engineering company in 1989 with a staff of only six employees. The story goes on to tell how Kevin made this small business grow to a booming enterprise which is now home to 61 employees.

TPD Attends 88th Annual Pennsylvania State Association of Boroughs

On June 20-23, TPD representatives, Matt Malozi, Robyn Hall, Tim Hendricks, and Bob Stone (retired from PennDOT Engineering District 5-0) will be attending the 88th Annual Pennsylvania State Association of Boroughs (PSAB) Convention at the Adams Mark Hotel, Philadelphia, PA. Mayor Rendell, Governor Ridge, and Lt. Governor Schweiker have been invited by PSAB to attend. TPD’s exhibit will showcase the company’s qualifications and experience for signal design with special emphasis on closed loop signal systems. TPD will also raffle tickets for a penthouse luxury suite for the Pirates vs. Phillies game on June 22 at Veterans Stadium.

Recent PennDOT Jobs

Open-End Contract:

District 6-0 awarded one of four separate open-end contracts for engineering services to Michael Baker Jr., Inc. Team on which TPD is a major sub consultant. TPD was chosen by Baker due to our expertise in traffic engineering, highway design and environmental (noise, air quality, and wetland) studies. An open-end contract means that Baker and TPD are pre-approved for work and PennDOT may use them for jobs without accepting formal letters of interest and proposals.

Union Ave Bridge Project, Bala Cynwood:

TPD (as a sub consultant) will work with Frederic R. Harris, Inc. (prime consultant) on the River Road Bridge project. TPD will be responsible for Maintenance Traffic Protection (MTP) and end treatment. MTP consists of roadway design for work area through traffic and detours; the end treatment portion of the project includes designing links between the road and the bridge.

MAY 1999

HOP Contract Awarded

On Wednesday, May 19, 1999, TPD was named the prime consultant on District 6-0’s Highway Occupancy Permit (HOP) Review Assistance Contract. A HOP is necessary any time a company or individual desires to install a driveway on a state road. TPD will share the work and revenue with sub consultant, McMahon Associates.
