Co-op Opportunities

At Traffic Planning and Design, Inc. (TPD) we pride ourselves on providing a remarkable work experience to people who want to get their feet wet in the engineering business. If you are looking to get an early start on a career as an engineer (or just want to find out what traffic engineering is all about), then TPD is the place for you.

TPD is a 135-member (35 of whom are either current or former co-ops/part-timers) consulting engineering firm specializing in transportation engineering and related environmental services. TPD strongly believes in a policy of promoting from within, which provides TPD employees fantastic opportunities for rapid advancement within our six departments.

TPD was founded in 1989 by Kevin L. Johnson, P.E.  Pictured is the company's Pottstown Office.

“I attended a township meeting on a project I worked on.  It’s rewarding to see your work in action,” said former 3 time co-op and now full
time employee, Matt Hammond pictured above.
What We Do:

Transportation Planning/Traffic Impact Studies

Highway and Intersection Design

Traffic Signal Design and Permitting

Structural (Bridge) Design

Noise, Wetland, and Air Quality Studies

Municipal Services

Former Drexel co-op, Brian McAnallen, performs field work such as speed studies and driveway & intersection check lists.

TPD is a growing company and was named in 2004 to The Philadelphia Business Journal’s Philly 100 Hall of Fame for being one of the fastest growing privately help firms for 5 consecutive years. Everyone plays an important role.  Former Drexel co-op, now full time employee, Matt Hammond says, “They give you a lot of responsibility, but they also give you as much help as you need.  At TPD,  you get the chance to do things that you wouldn’t get at other companies.  You’re not a gopher.”

Mentoring Program:

Real Experience - Real Engineers
At TPD you’ll be paired with a junior level engineer in one of our six departments who will help relate your academic training to real engineering work.  Marty Rosen, former Drexel co-op now full-time employee says, “Craig [his mentor] allows me enough room to do a lot on my own, but he’s also right there if I need help.”

TPD is a great place to work.  Eric Ostimchuk (EO), former Widener co-op and now full-time employee, attests, “I chose TPD for the chance to do ‘real engineering work.’  Also, you get the opportunity to work directly with engineers, even Kevin [President/Founder of TPD].  Kevin is always receptive to questions and concerns.”

What You’ll Do:

  • Provide technical support for engineering staff which may include analyses, report preparation, drafting, etc.

  • Team with a junior level engineer and gain hands-on, real life experience.
  • Assume responsibility for the completion of data collection in a timely manner.  This includes traffic counts, parking studies/surveys, noise studies, site visits, etc.

Great Work...Great Times

Recent Drexel co-op, Brian says, “Everyone is friendly and energized.”  EO adds, “The work environment is professional, but laid back. You won’t have any problems as long as you do what you have to do.  Everyone is very helpful and it is a very cooperative atmosphere.”
